How we calculate your bathroom remodel cost

We price the project line by line: demolition, cabinetry or fixtures, finishes, labor, permits, and a contingency buffer. Every line has its own low and high unit price, so the range you see comes from real spread in the market, not a flat percentage. Labor is then adjusted by state, and materials move far less by location than labor does.

Unit prices are national benchmark ranges last reviewed September 2026. Treat the result as a planning number for setting a budget and judging contractor bids. It is not a quote. Read our full methodology.

Bathroom remodel cost FAQs

How much does a bathroom remodel cost?

A typical full remodel of a 40–50 sq ft bathroom with mid-range finishes lands around $11,000 to $26,000 depending on your state and choices. A cosmetic refresh costs far less, while a gut-and-rebuild with a walk-in shower and stone tile costs far more.

Why is the cost per square foot so high?

Bathrooms are small but packed with expensive work: plumbing, waterproofing, tile and fixtures. Those costs do not shrink much with the room, so a small bathroom costs more per square foot than most other rooms.

What is the biggest cost driver?

The tub or shower and its tile, followed by labor. Moving a toilet or drain adds thousands because the subfloor has to be opened.

Does the estimate include permits and demolition?

Yes. Demolition and disposal are included in every project size, and permits are included unless you turn them off in the Extras step.

How accurate is this calculator?

It is a planning estimate built from national benchmark unit prices, adjusted by state. Use it to set a budget and check contractor bids, then get at least three itemized quotes.
